Please Note: As of January 2010, we will be charging a fee for all classes offered at The Birth Center EXCEPT: Mother Infant Assessment, Breastfeeding and Support Groups.

 Early Pregnancy Series

Wednesdays 6-8:00 pm

Cost:  $60/ 3 class Series

Take the opportunity in your early months of pregnancy to optimize your health, comfort and wellness.  Good nutrition, exercise and self-care during pregnancy are shown to decrease complications in pregnancy, labor and birth.


Nutrition in Pregnancy

Taught by Certified Nutritionist and birth center mom, Emily Moore, this class focuses on how to feed your body the best fuel possible in pregnancy.  This class focuses on avoiding toxins, optimizing nutrient dense snacks and gaining the healthiest amount of weight in pregnancy.

 

Prenatal Exercise


This class is taught by Anne Duch, a physical therapist who specializes in women's health.  In prenatal exercises, Anne teaches good body mechanics in pregnancy, safe exercise techniques and the importance of strengthening the muscles of the abdomen, pelvic floor and back.  This is a general overview to the importance of safe exercise in pregnancy.

 

Anne also teaches a "work-out" class every Monday from 7-8pm for pregnant moms at The Birth Center. 


Monitoring Your Pregnancy


This class is taught by Kathleen McCarthy CNM, MSN.  Kathleen is one of the midwives and owners here at The Birth Center.  Kathleen reviews physical and emotional changes that occur during pregnancy-- some normal, some abnormal.  Learn how to deal with uncomfortable changes like heartburn in holistic ways and how to notice possible warning signs such as preterm labor.  Bring all questions and concerns about pregnancy!



  Optimal Birth Experience  

Wednesdays 6pm-8pm 

(Starting January, 2010)      Cost $20

A very important class for all pregnant families!  Learn how the precise position of your baby affects the progress of labor and birth.  Learn good body positioning and exercises to make sure your baby is in the best position possible for birthing. Many factors impact our overall birth experience; learn how you can have your best birth. 


  Childbirth Full Series  

Cost:  $150 for 5 week series   

This five-week series covers everything you need to know about giving birth!  This class is taught by our Registered Nurses Peggy, Katie and Charlotte.  Each class is limited to about 10 couples.  This is a great place to not only learn about labor and birth, but also meet friends who will be having their baby in the same month.

Wednesdays OR Thursdays 5:30-7:00pm

Class One: Introduction to Labor and Birth

This class focuses on the mechanics of labor and birth.  Learn what movements a baby makes as she moves into the pelvis and prepares to be born.  We review the stages of labor and what mom will be feeling during each.

Class Two: Relaxation, Positioning and Breathing

You will be able to cope with the discomforts of labor!  During this class, mom and her partner will learn focus, breathing, positioning and positive thinking prepare to birth naturally. 

Class Three: Labor Rehearsal

Have your bags packed and get ready for the dress rehearsal!  In this class, mom and partner will start having "contractions" at home, come to The Birth Center and begin the labor process.  This is you opportunity to get into the rooms, sit on the stool, get in the tub and sit on the birth ball.  We will guide you through "contractions" and help you practice riding through them.

Class Four: Hospital Interventions

This class reviews the interventions that a mom may encounter when giving birth in the hospital.  Learn about everything from epidurals to cesarean birth. 

Class Five: Adjusting to Life as a Parent

Everything changes when you have a baby.  This class reviews the minor and major changes that come along with having a new baby.  Coping with crying, car seats and organizing your time are reviewed.


  

Childbirth Refresher

Wednesdays 5:30-7:00pm

Cost: $40 for 2 classes


Taught by our RNs, this two-week series is for all expectant parents who have completed a full series with a
previous pregnancy.  Brush up on the physiology of birth and relaxation techniques.

 

Class One: Labor & Birth Review

Review the stages of labor and how mom may feel during each stage.  Time is spent in this class processing past birth experiences and accepting that each birth is different and unique.

Class Two: Labor Rehearsal

Practice relaxation, deep breathing and supportive positioning in the birth rooms.  Become familiar with the tub, the stools, and the birth balls and how each can help you cope with labor.

  Mother Infant Assessment

This class is FREE for Birth Center clients. $35 for non-clients.

The same class is offered twice on select Saturdays

10 am - 12pm & 1pm-3pm

This one time, two-hour class is mandatory for Birth center clients. Learn how to care for both mom & baby during the first few days at home.  Learn what is normal in a newborn, how to be sure baby is getting enough to eat and how to be sure mom gets enough rest and heals after the birth.  The goal of this class is to help you feel more prepared to take baby home after an early discharge!

Breastfeeding Class

This class is FREE for both Birth Center & Non-Birth Center Clients.


Held the first Thursday of each month at 7:30pm

For families interested in learning more about breastfeeding. Partners encouraged to attend! Taught by our Certified Lactation Consultant Katie Madden.

Childbirth Education

for the Planned Hospital Birth

Cost: $45 per couple

This one day class is designed for those expecting parents seeking a
natural childbirth in a hospital setting.
This class reviews the birth process, but mostly focuses on
relaxation and breathing techniques, good positions to assume during labor
(even with an IV and continuous monitoring) and how to navigate the hospital system.
It is recommended that you take this class in conjuction with a Full Childbirth Series.

Caring for your Newborn

Cost: $25
Select Mondays 5pm-7pm
This is a one-time 2 hour class taught by an RN.  Learn the skills you need to be
confident in caring for your newborn.  Learn the following skills: swaddling, diapering, circumcision care, bathing, dressing, nail care, comforting a crying baby, safety & much more!

Sibling Class

Cost: $25 per family

This one-time class is for all expectant parents who wish to have their older child(ren) attend the birth.  Plan to attend the class about a month before your due date.  Sibling support person needs to attend the class with children whenever possible.

"Fit Moms"


Prenatal Exercise Class - Train for the big event!  Learn essential exercises for prevention of pregnancy aches and pains, improved posture, and specific exercises for muscles used during labor and delivery.

Cloth Diapering
Come and learn the benefits and tricks to cloth diapering.

This class is taught by Inge,  the owner and creator www.diaperware.com .
Although she sells diapers on her site, there is absolutely no obligation to buy...just
come and learn all about cloth!
We will discuss different types and styles of cloth diapers including pre-folds, all-in-
ones, pocket, etc. 
Practice your diapering techniques, learn how to wash and care for your diapers and how to get started.
Moms who currently cloth diaper are welcome to come and share their knowledge and favorite tricks and products.

Prenatal Yoga

Yoga in Pregnancy helps ease the aches and pains of pregnancy and stabilize mood. Learn safe postures and stretching that will help increase the strength and flexibility that contribute to a safe and successful natural birth experience.

MaMa Baby Boot Camp


Join Anne Duch, physical therapist and certified women’s health specialist, for a fun and effective postpartum workout series. Class will incorporate cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and focused abdominal and pelvic floor activities while using knowledge of postpartum mechanics to do so safely.
Monday Mornings 11am- 12pm at Tulaa Yoga Studio
